Grammy Awards 2019: Here’s Why This Year Looks Very Different Than Past Years

The music industry’s biggest awards show is this Sunday night, the 61st Grammy Awards at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Over the last few years, some critics have complained about the proportion of female artists in relation to male artists that have been nominated for the biggest awards of the night. This year looks a lot different with female acts holding their own in the categories of Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.

Cardi B has been nominated for three Grammy’s including Album and Record of the Year, but the hip hop artist has some strong competition from an artist in a completely different genre of music, Brandi Carlile. Carlile, who many critics think will be a spoiler this year, is also nominated for Song of the Year but if the last two movie award shows are a sign, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper cold steal that award with “Shallow” from the movie “A Star is Born”.

The nominees for Best New Artist are Chloe X Halle (a Beyonce protégé group), Luke Combs, Dua Lipa, H.E.R., Margo Price, Bebe Rexa, Jorja Smith, and rockers Greta Van Fleet.

The Grammy’s will broadcast live on CBS at 8 p.m. on February 10.
