STORM UPDATE

As a powerful storm moves through New Hampshire today, there’s a winter storm warning for the whole state, except Coos County where there’s a winter weather advisory. The combination of pasty snow and winds gusting at 30-to-40 miles per hour had already caused widespread power outages affecting thousands of customers. Snow totals could exceed 12-to-18 inches in the higher elevations of Hillsborough County and the Monadnock Region. Generally, eight-inches to a foot can be expected elsewhere with lesser amounts possible north of the White Mountains and along the coast.

Road conditions were reportedly poor statewide with snow falling and winds blowing . New Hampshire State Police responded to over 60 weather-related crashes and spin outs by mid-morning. Maximum speed on snow-covered highways was lowered to 45 miles-per-hour. Anyone who must travel was advised to allow extra time and to drive slowly.

Numerous flights were canceled at Manchester-Boston Regional Airport due to today’s storm. Travelers are advised to check with their airline about the status of their flights. Amtrak has canceled Downeaster train service between Brunswick, Maine, and Boston which has three stops in New Hampshire. Boston Express bus service between southern New Hampshire and Boston has been suspended and Concord Coach Lines was canceling service to and from Boston as of early this afternoon. Coast Transportation has also curtailed operations today.

Dozens of communities postponed town meetings because of today’s storm. The second Tuesday in March has traditionally been Town Meeting Day in New Hampshire. Some meetings have already been rescheduled for March 28th. The secretary of state’s office said people will be able to vote via absentee ballots only if they are unable to attend a new meeting date.
