A two-million-acre wind energy area has been designated off the coasts of Maine and New Hampshire.

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has announced the waters of the Gulf of Maine, between 23 and 92 miles offshore, could supply 32 gigawatts of clean energy.

This would surpass state goals for wind energy, and provide electricity for more than ten million homes, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

Analysts say the designation has left out sensitive environmental, marine life, and Native fishing areas.

A 30-day public comment period is now underway.
