Brig. Gen. John ‘Pogo’ Pogorek, commander of the New Hampshire Air National Guard, was killed at age 57 on Monday in what is being called a hit and run accident.

The accident occurred about 5:22 p.m. around 10 Crown Point Road. Rochester police said Pogorek, a Strafford resident, was driving a 2014 Toyota Tundra pulling a trailer.

Pogorek stopped on the side of the road and got out of his vehicle to resecure a load on the trailer, when a red 2012 Toyota RAV4 driving west on Crown Point Road struck him, according to police.

The RAV4 continued without stopping, police said. Police said they located the RAV4 and determined the driver was Paul Clement, 81, of Rochester.

Police did not immediately announce charges.

Pogorek was pronounced dead at the scene.
