Biologists Confirm Presence of Pesky Spiny Water Fleas in Lake Winnipesaukee
An invasive species is calling New Hampshire waters home.
State environmental experts announced last week that a new aquatic flea has taken up residence in Lake Winnipesaukee.
Officials say a group of biologists detected the zooplankton called the spiny water flea in the deepest part of the lake two weeks ago.
The creatures are basically harmless to human beings.
However, once they’ve settled in, there’s no way to get rid of them.
The experts say the best thing you can do is rinse down yourself and any gear to keep from spreading the creatures to other bodies of water.
