Hundreds of Mice Surrendered
The New Hampshire SPCA in Stratham took in 300 mice this week and expects hundreds more, all surrendered from a Seacoast home.
The NHSPCA is working to find space to accommodate the animals and is asking for the public’s help through adoption, fostering and financial support.
The first batch of mice were dropped in to the shelter this past Monday
The NHSPCA stated a man entered its lobby and told them he was overwhelmed by the sheer number of mice in his possession, initially saying he had 150 pet mice in his home. Subsequently, officials said, he clarified he had 150 tanks with mice in them.
Officials said the homeowner brought three large plastic tubs to the NHSPCA on Monday, which combined produced 73 mice. Subsequently, the NHSPCA staff have been to the home this week, filling vans with tubs full of mice.
The NHSPCA estimates there are approximately 400 mice still at the man’s home.
Officials said the mice were not separated by sex and were reproducing uncontrolled. Many of the females came into the shelter pregnant. By Tuesday morning, more mice had been born.
Officials said some of the mice would be available for adoption beginning today. Community members wishing to help are encouraged to foster, adopt or donate. Information available at nhspca dot org.
