Former Red Sox Team President Larry Lucchino Has Died,
Larry Lucchino, who served as Red Sox president and CEO for more than a decade, has died after a long battle with cancer. He was 78 years old.
Lucchino was a key decision-maker for building three World Series champion teams in Boston.
He and team owners Tom Werner and John Henry hired Theo Epstein as the youngest general manager in major league history in 2002, and together the group won two of those World Series titles, including the 2004 one that broke a streak of 86 straight seasons without a World Series win.
Under his watch, the Red Sox also won the World Series in 2007 and after Epstein left, they won again in 2013. After leaving his post in 2015, Lucchino settled in as the team’s president and CEO emeritus and also spent time organizing the franchise’s efforts to move its Triple-A affiliate from Pawtucket to Worcester.
