House Democratic Leader Cushing Dies

New Hampshire House Democratic Leader Renny Cushing has died after a battle with cancer.

The Hampton lawmaker was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer in late 2020.

The Democratic Leader announced last week he was taking a medical leave.   In a statement, he said he was following the advice of his doctors.

Cushing, 69,  is survived by his wife and three daughters.

Governor Chris Sununu releasing a statement is says in part, “Renny Cushing served his community for decades in the New Hampshire House and made a lasting impact on the issues he cared deeply about,” said Governor Chris Sununu. “My thoughts are with the Cushing family during this unimaginable time.”

U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan saying, “Renny served his community and New Hampshire up to his very last days, and he always led by example. He showed us that an individual’s voice matters, and the importance of bringing our lived experience into our advocacy. This made him not only an effective leader but also a dear friend to me and many, many others. Renny’s generous spirit infused everything he did — bringing an easy smile to the faces of those around him, and creating consensus and goodwill even in the face of spirited disagreements.

Congressman Chris Pappas also releasing a statement of the passing of New Hampshire House Democratic Leader Renny Cushing, “I’m deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my friend Renny Cushing. This is a deeply personal loss for so many who knew him, and my thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. Renny devoted his life to serving the people of New Hampshire and to making this state and this world a more just and equitable place for all.”
