New Hampshire Confirms First 2024 Eastern Equine Encephalitis Death in U.S.
New Hampshire health officials say a resident, a man, has died from eastern encephalitis.
His family says 41-year-old Steven Perry had been healthy before developing EEE, as it’s called, a rare but sometimes deadly virus spread by infected mosquitoes.
It’s the first EEE death reported in the U.S. this year.
The CDC says this is the fifth EEE case with others reported in New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont and Wisconsin.
Symptoms often mimic other viruses including fever, chills, body aches, diarrhea and fatigue but can also include meningitis or encephalitis.
